Backing up your LJ (Or IJ) For Mac, Linux & Windows Users

I decided another post would be better, since a few friends both here and on LJ seem to be having trouble with LJ Archive, ect.

  • LJ Book is a well-known site that turns your LJ or IJ into a PDF, and then later, if you want it, book form. Mostly for writers, but it's been used very heavily the last few days to back up LJ's. The site is down constantly lately because of overload to the servers, and it's hard to grab a time when the conversion will actually go through because of the traffic. Still, if you can manage to sneak through traffic and get your PDF, the service is completely free as far as I can tell, and it works on all systems because it's totally online.

  • LJ Dump is a program that works with Python and it's usable on both Linux, Mac & Windows (and just about every system that uses Python). The program is probably confusing to new users (it is for me), so there's a lj community for the program if you have any serious questions. I tried running this one, but the terminal use is confusing (since I'm not big on terminals), so I "dumped" this. Heh!

  • Instead, I found this site for Linux people (may work with Mac, too, come to think of it). All you have to do is open a terminal, copy/paste the first code (while online), and then copy/paste the second one with your specific changes. This works automatically with LJ and it converts every post in your journal into a txt file in your puter (in Linux, it'll put them in your home folder, BTW). If you have a lot of posts, it'll take a while, but it works! All posts are organized by subject title, not date. Still, it's easy to search through them if you're using Konqueror. It worked just fine for me! ^^

The only thing is, he says all you have to do is change the top variable to make it work on something like IJ, but I'm too brain melty to figure out how, right now. So instead, I went looking for other, more stupid-friendly alternatives...

  • For Windows users, there's also LJ Sec (sorta like lj archive). Instructions for this program, here, and another set here.

  • Antennapedia posted yet another alternative for all three (Windows, Linux, Mac)... similar to LJ Sec (transfers your entire LJ to another journal service, like IJ as backup). All you do is download the zip file / tar file / whichever, and read the instructions. I'm still working on this one! (Because I think the idea of transferring cozzybabbles (yes, it does communities!) to LJ would be kewl.)

  • Mac Book also works with LJ, from what I hear! For Mac users, obviously. ^^

  • There's also this from LJ itself, if you're computer savvy. Apparently, you CAN use this to backup your stuff and put it all on Wordpress.

  • And this thing--another perl! Hee!

  • XJournal for Mac.

  • Another Windows program.

...And I'm totally done now. Hee!!

Hm... Ljbook sounds the best I think, because I'd rather save it all online than on my computer. Rather not have close to a decade of posting on my harddrive. >_<

Will look into it but I am SO computer/technology illiterate! Based on my capabilities in those fields, you'd think I was in my 50s instead of my 20s!
Hee! I'm with you. If I still had my original account on LJ, I'd be terrified at the idea of backing up all those posts. Years of blogging really does build up!

Still, the PDF file will be HUGE anyway, and probably very, very long loading, so there's a good bet it'll take just as much space. Waaaaaaaaaaaah!

*pets you* It's not so bad! Everyone has puter troubles sometimes! ^^
:Sticks up hand:

What is Python?
Hee! Sorry this took so long, loverly! *kishes*

Python is a programing language that makes... well, programs! Hee! I'm pretty sure all you'll need to do is double click. Pretty sure. It's been a while since I've used Windows. (If you decide to go for it, though, I can find out for you! ^^)
Never mind. I'm all right now I've got LJ Book to work for me.
Okies! ^^
Thanks babe, gonna try one right now ^___^
OMG CHESTAGE! *licks*

Umm... what? *scrolls*

Oh! Yesh! Try! Did it work? :D

I used LJ Dump - it got everything down, but all jumbled up in text format, like the following, which is just replies without the entry- like so:

call/text/email friend 2 and let her know you're available to hang out if she wants to meet up. It could be she still wants to see you, but didn't feel like talking on the phone at the time. Good luck!salt_freak2007-08-25T09:15:55Z19Ha, thanks for responding! In the end, I went out with friend1 and friend2 with boyfriend turned up as well! Looking all loveydovey...orehime192007-08-25T15:29:29Z20

I'm sure with a little playing around that could be fixed up though....
Yesh! It's a just a matter of playing with the code! *finds some code/hacker guy who really knows what he's doing*

Hee!
If you have a lot of posts, it'll take a while, but it works! All posts are organized by subject title, not date. Still, it's easy to search through them if you're using Konqueror. It worked just fine for me! ^^

Bah. I'm not running KDE (didn't like, it was really buggy for me). . .

Also, for Linux users, they can download Logjam and do it that way as a text file as well. There's a lot of code thrown in, but it's quick and you have your entries, which is better than nothing. ;-)
Hee! Are you using KDE 4 or KDE 3? KDE 3 seems pretty stable (which is what I'm using), KDE 4 is... not so much. But then, they released it beta so I guess that comes with the territory.

Yay for logjam! I'll keep that in mind! :D
Fairly sure it was KDE4 and I'm running Intrepid, though I can't imagine that would make much difference.

Can you still GET KDE3? Obviously not through the repositories, so how would I even go digging that up?

Logjam, though not fancy, was able to do it though, thankfully (then it's a matter of going through my homefolder to find it, which was minor),
Oh you can get KDE 3--I only redid my puter a few months ago, and all the KDE 3 stuff is in the repository. It also still does updates. But maybe it's only for Ubuntu? That shouldn't make a difference, right? *ponders* At any rate, I've heard there's another version of KDE 4 out, so maybe the newest one is more stable. I remember getting the first KDE 4 and hating it because my computer kept stalling. Doh!

Thanks for the logjam, I might try it to backup the IJ's.
I'll have to check the repositories again and see what I can find. ;-) Intrepid is just the new version of Ubuntu (8.10?) and it's ,... not much different then 8.04. lol
Oooh! There's 8.10! Intrepid was out when I got 8.04 (which is what I'm using), but for some reason, I got Hardy instead. I think it was because it was more stable... *thinkers* Anyway, yay for no difference! I may update laters.

I can check the repositories too if you want! I'm pretty sure KDE 3 is still there, but I haven't checked. ^^
Depending on your timing, Intrepid may have still been in beta. ;-) I've been running it for a couple of months now without any problems. :D I started out with Hardy in May. :D
Ah, okay! I think I got it sometime in October... hee! I can't remember, though, it may have been earlier. Oh well! I'll make the new update after I find another external to back stuff up. My old external broke! Doh!
Oh noes! I just got a 320 gig at Target for ~ $80. :D
ZOMG THAT WINS! I totally have to get one! I don't think there's a Target around here, but there is a Walmart! *checks for sales*
LOL It's totally worth a shot. I was so amused because the 320 was $40 cheaper than the 120. o_O I don't know if that was temporary pricing or what.
Whoa! That IS weird. But, dude, that's incredibly cheap for 320 gigs!! :D

I finally looked at your userpage and I see you like prison break and Ianto!! OMG Torchwood! *swoons*
Yeah, I was really surprised at the deal I found. Hard drives have come down SO much in cost, it's awesome.

Bwahahaha

Um. Yes?
Ooooh! Maybe it's linked to everything else getting cheaper! I must take advantage!

And yes, Torchwood = AWESOME! Dude, I never saw a show as open as that one before. Sadly, I don't get BBC and I can't find the show online, but the parts I have seen.... *wibbles*
you can get the DVDs at Borders and, possibly, Target. Um. Not sure about Wallyworld. Probably too conservative. :/
Hee! Nah, I'd have to order it online. Literally, in the middle of nowhere, the only option I have is Wallyworld. Doh!

Oh well! *still wibbling*

You sound pretty interesting! Do you mind if I add you? ^^
Amazon has it, though it's still pretty pricey, but at least it's there. ;-)

And sure, add away! I was thinking the same thing. I'm not as active here as I'd like to be (I sometimes forget to cross post as I still use the other place - someone bought me a perm account this year), but I'm trying! ;-)
Hee! I'm pretty active, at least (when I'm not working my butt off), so maybe I'll draw you back here. xD

Yay for Amazon! It'll be a while--just about every penny I have is being saved right now. Doh! But it's a dream! Want! :D
