The Problem With IJ

Sorry about comments--thanks so much for the support on the mural, I'll reply back soonish. And the questions about the programs for backing up LJ--I don't have the time to answer right now, but hopefully, tonight I'll be able to grab some internet to explain things. ^^

Anyway, let's face it--there's not a lot of activity going on in IJ. Everyone goes to LJ. But LJ is Doomed right now, and the company is rather horrid, anyway--so why not just bring everything to IJ and post here. Hm?

The thing is, you go and look for an active comm to post in and meet people, and the only things you can find with actual activity is either RP comms or meet-you-ups. And while those are all good and dandy, I'd really rather like some actual content. For someone who is actually based on this site and not just posting between LJ and IJ as backup, it's important.

So! I'm looking for ideas to start a comm that everyone will be happy to post in and make friends with others, so we can explode with activity. We have to start somewhere, right? I'm thinking maybe a writing comm like [info]writing101, since a) content, b) friendly, and c) everyone loves them! The problem is, I don't just want a writing comm to post stuff in and never have any replies to posts. I want something that's interactive, with prompts and events and such! Maybe if we combined both ofic AND original fic in the same comm? Is that possible? Like, any writing in general, just as long as there's love abound? And we could have contests, because everyone loves contests!

*thinkers*

Anyway. If not writing, then something. *shakes flist for ideas*

Don't mind me. It's early for me, I'm off to work, and I haven't even taken a shower yet. Doh!

Comments

I know what you mean! I'd hoped that by starting a brand new GW comm devoted just to dark fiction I could lure all the people still interested in the fandom and have an active comm, but you saw what happened. A half dozen post, a few more comment but the remaining 30 just lurk and do nothing, then wonder why the comm dies. Grrrrrr.  Well, whatever you come up with, I'm game for. *prepares joining finger*
Awwwwwwwwwww! gw_dark isn't dead! Well, not on LJ! Not really! Not any more dead than the other gw comms, when you think about it!

I'm not helping, are I? *thinkers* Well, at least it had a good run. And I have fics to post there, once I get a chance to finish something!

As for comm-making, I probably won't do it until things calm down for me, but rest assured, the moment I'm bored out of my mind, I'll be thinking of names! ^^
D: I saw that sort of thing with GW prompt. I think it's on LJ - you may know of it.

Like, 100-worder ficlets about certain subjects. I dunno if many people actually write, though.
Hee! It's on IJ, silly, and it's [info]gundam_100. Or at least, I think that's it.

Oh well! We used to write drabbles there all the time, but then there was a thing... and I really am not a drabble person... so you know. I sort of wish the word count was higher, because that's easier.
Sounds like a plan, if IJ is to become more of a community in the LJ mold.

A fic prompts community is a good idea. Even if only a few people commented to start with, it might attract more readers/commenters along the way.

Thing is, it might need to offer something different to what can already be found on LJ. That's the tricky part.
Yesh! It's got to be really unique and original, and it will take some serious thought. Getting people to join probably won't be *that* hard, at least not at first, since I know of a few friends I can flog into posting a whole bunch to get it active at first. Keeping it active is tricky--because people get bored, some turn into lurkers, and for others, RL gets in the way. Doh!

I'll post about it again when I have more time--it's not like IJ is going anywhere, and I'm way too busy anyway. But it's a fun thought for now!
It's a good thing you answered this comment, as I'd totally forgotten I was going to buy myself an IJ. Rushes off to do it.
YAY! Welcome to the land of insane! *kishes you crazy* ^^
I now have a paid account and gazillions more icons. I just don't quite know when I'll get around to using them.
Yay!! Sorry this took so long, but yay! How many icons did you get? I've got 300 with this account, and I STILL haven't managed to fill the limit. Bwa!
I have 300 now too. When will I ever use them all?
Hee! Well, I've had this account for little over a year now, and I STILL haven't managed to fill it! Doh!! Of course, it'd probably get very confusing, then. Imagine all the keywords you'd have to scroll through! ^^
For the most part I am still anchored at LJ, because at least there is some life there. But you are right, and I fear for my other journals there as well - all those backup thingies you posted about before did for me was make it all the more clear I shall never attain true nerd status.

A new, fresh, alive comm at IJ would be fantastic, though I have to wonder about how much use it will be. All the comms that are born these days get some attention when they're still small and cute, but when they're a few months old they seem to lose that adorability factor.

(Yes, I know.   preach before I practice, nya~? (^¬^;)\   Heh.)

I'm always on the lookout for writing comms myself and there are a lot out there (at LJ), but I do not like most for having stoopid rules or elitist behaviour. When it comes to formats, I like prompt table comms (without the 'having to claim characters' evil), drabble comms, and weekly (or whatever) challenges. And I had fun with that metaphors exercise you posted at writing_101, Cozz. ^^

*stops talking to see what happens next*
Hee! You'll always be a nerd in my book! Nerds are hot, and you're steamy! *love*

Don't worry, LJ is there the life is, there's no avoiding it. In fact, I visit the site all the time, probably moreso than IJ because my flist on LJ is much more active. Still, IJ is a home to me and I feel like, sometimes at least, the site should be more active than it is. And to do that, we definitely need better comms.

Really, it's no different than LJ used to be, back when it was tiny and owned by the original creator. It used to be *really* hard to find anything other than RP comms, poet comms and weird dating things. And even then, half the comms were inactive, you know?

But making a comm here would be tricky, because it needs to be unique, it needs to be built to *last*, and it has to be set up in a way to lure activity without being pretentious. That is, if we want something really active--but then again, how much activity would you really get on IJ anyway, even if it *was* super active by comparison? Even at it's highest, IJ doesn't hold a candle to some of LJ's comms. But that's okay, since I really don't want a super-active comm anyway. Just something to do for doing's sake, since IJ does seem rather lonely at times. Not to mention boring. *pats it*

Yay for metaphor exercises! I loved finding those, so I'm definitely going to add those into the comm when it happens. I also like weekly prompts, prompt tables, and drabble-friendly comms. And stuff happening, like amusing things. Nekid_spike on LJ is probably the best comm I've ever seen, which has stuff going on all the time, like mod challenges, dear Spike (ask Spike a question, he gives an amusing answer), this thing where you can ask for a drabble if you're having a bad day, all sorts of things. They have tons of mods, though, and everyone is very good at their job, so it keeps up well. Hee!

Anyway, we'll see--I'm not going to start anything until I have more time, which could be months from now. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
*jumps you*

I sooo wnat to fins a good place to post my writing on IJ. I'm pretty sure I joined most fo the writer's communities you guy made, but since I've written squat lately, or in such obscure fandoms no one knows them, I haven't shared anything in months !

Pleas ebeat me up so I finish ZF. And for your Christmas fic, too. I want to write that one so ba,d bti my motivation is zero. I need to shape up !

I'd love a comm where I could just see somethign and then poof! go writing, but I suck roo much to make it myself.
Yay, permission to beat you up!! *gets a sledge hammer* The GW fandom has taken a major beating lately, but thankfully, it seems like there's at least *some* action in gw500 and gw_dark on LJ. Not much, but it's something! Maybe you should repost Zero Four at gw_dark! I mean, you may get comments, and then it might motivate you! What you need is motivation! *nods all important like*

Hee! I'm still thinking of making a writing comm, but I'm gonna do it once things calm down and I get more time. There's just waaaaaaaay too much going on right now. ^^
... Dude, I must have beend runk when I typed this. Look at all the typos.

I'm not sure ZF is appropriately dark for that comm, though. It's got lots of fluff and stuff, my bad for not writing specific genres, really.
Hee! You were runk alright! *pets and pets*

Nah, I think it's dark enough! Just warn for some occasional fluffiness. Hee! Worse comes to worse, tell them I sent you, since E is mod of the comm and she won't possibly turn you *and* me away! *wields a sledgehammer* ^^
